A total of 300 guests from around the globe gathered at the 2025 International Conference on Reducing Food Loss and Waste being held in Jinan, Shandong province, from July 24 to 26, where they are focusing on global grain issues.
Shandong, a major agricultural province in China, is making progress in reducing grain loss and waste through innovation, showcasing its wisdom and China's commitment to global food security to the world.

The province is pioneering grain loss reduction through technology and innovation. By integrating research institutes, enterprises, and cooperatives, it has enhanced seed quality, making each seed a "gene carrier" for loss reduction. The "Jike 109" wheat variety, developed over the course of 13 years, boosts yields by 4.8 percent with traits like cold and lodging resistance.
Mechanized farming is optimized with smart machinery, supported by policies like increased subsidies for low-loss equipment and cooperative farming models. In Wenshang county, new combine harvesters cut losses from 15 percent to under 5 percent.
Globally, Shandong's practices are becoming international standards. Its "grain loss assessment toolkit" is used in 12 African countries, and its smart grain storage systems have been recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organization, providing a shining example of "a community with a shared future for humanity".
